Penny Pot Piggy Bank
Want to collect your change for the IBP? Make this papier-mâché piggy bank, then fill it up - by yourself or, like Ardena Gojani, get your friends and family to help. Before you start this project, please show the directions to your parent or guardian for their permission and help. There is a lot of drying time between papier-mâché layers, so this project takes a few days. Supplies:
Step One: Flour-water Glue for Papier-Mâché: Put 4 cups water on the stove to boil. In a separate bowl, mix 1 cup of flour into 1 cup of water until the mixture is thin and runny. Stir mixture into the 4 cups of boiling water. Simmer about 3 minutes, then let cool. Step Two: Blow up one balloon for each piggy bank. Tear the newspaper or brown paper into lots of strips - about 1 inch or less wide; length doesn't really matter. Dip each strip of paper in the flour glue and wrap it around the balloon. Cover the whole balloon with a single layer of paper, then let it dry at least overnight. Repeat until you have two or three layers around the balloon, letting it dry overnight between layers. Once you have all your layers built up, let the papier-mâché balloon dry for a few days. Step 3: Once your papier-mâché balloon is completely dry, pop the balloon and remove it from the inside. (You can use a craft knife to pop the balloon and make small hole to pull out the balloon. Make the hole at one end of the balloon, that way you can cover it up when you add the snout.) You now have the body and head of the pig! Step 4: It's time to add the legs and the snout. Separate 5 paper egg carton sections (one for each leg and the snout). Use the masking tape to attach them to the oval-shaped body. (Remember to cover the hole you pulled the balloon out through!) Now, either paint your pig with tempera paint or use pink tissue paper. For the tissue paper coating, tear or cut the tissue paper into small pieces (a few inches big). Cover the pig with a very thin layer of the flour-water glue (the easiest way is to use your fingers). Next, put the tissue paper pieces on the pig (you may need to add a little more glue occasionally) until you have a nice pink coat for the pig. Let the pig dry completely (again, at least overnight). Step 5: Time for the finishing touches! The tail: Using a sharp craft knife, make a small hole at the tail end of the pig. Insert a pipe cleaner into the hole, then shape the pipe cleaner into a spiral. Eyes: Draw eyes with a marker or glue on plastic eyes. Nostrils: Draw two nostrils on the snout with a marker. The Money Slot: Along the top of the pig's body, carefully cut a slot large enough to fit any coin. That's it! You're done! Now all you have to do is fill 'er up. |
